The NART L88 That Finished Le Mans Just Sold at Monterey for $747,500

Last week at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction, the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 RED/NART Le Mans sold for $747,500. That is the #4 car Dave Heinz and Bob Johnson drove to 15th overall and a class win at the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Kevin Mackay and the team at Corvette Repair Inc. in Valley Stream restored the car after Mike Yager acquired it in 1995, returning it to its 1972 NART Le Mans livery. Kevin has said it was one of the most enjoyable projects the shop has taken on. During the teardown they found a Nova master cylinder, a Vega GT steering wheel, Triumph lights, a snow-plow oil-pressure fitting, and marine switches — the improvised pieces Toye English’s RED team used to get the car race-ready. Those details were documented and left in place, including the TWA logos still visible under the BP decals, and surviving RED team members signed the underside of the hood.
